The scariest rides in Orlando

White-knuckle thrills at Walt Disney World and Universal

The Sunshine State does two things better than pretty much anywhere else in the US – beaches and theme parks. Many of our members choose to combine both during their Floridian holiday and it doesn’t matter whether you’re travelling with children, a group of friends or as a couple, we can arrange an itinerary that’ll suit you perfectly with accommodation at our partnered hotels, which offer you a range of exclusive benefits including complimentary breakfast and room upgrades*.

When it comes to thrill rides, you can’t beat Walt Disney World and Universal, so here are the white-knuckle rides that’ll really test your nerve.

The nerves will begin to jangle as you wait your turn in the queue and watch the cars being hoisted167 feet into the sky at a 90-degree angle. When you’re strapped in, you can choose between 30 songs to soundtrack your ride, each perfectly timed to crescendo as you plummet back towards earth straight into a double corkscrew. After that, the music will become a blur as you hurtle along at an eye-watering 65mph.

As you’d expect from a character renowned for his devastating rampages, the Incredible Hulk ride holds few prisoners and is one of the most intense rides in the park. Forget the slow, agonising ascent to the top of the coaster – riders are launched to 60mph and have little time to think before you’re twisting and looping for more than one kilometre. The sheer number of twists, turns and loops may leave coaster novices a little green, so it’s recommended that you build up to this one.

Muggles will spend a lot of time exploring the magical Wizarding World of Harry Potter and should arrive early to beat the queues for its star attraction. This revolutionary flight simulator takes you on a fast-paced quest through Hogwarts as you follow Harry and co on a mission to avoid and defeat the Dementors. Blending state-of-the-art technology with 3D graphics, you’ll feel like you’re plummeting to the ground, racing through the air at 100mph and being attacked by man-eating spiders.

The scenic water cruise starts out innocently enough but soon takes a terrifying turn when you’re bumped off course and enter a restricted area where dinosaurs are on the loose. While you duck under the razor-sharp teeth of a T rex and the spitting jaws of velociraptors, you are slowly being winched to the top of an 85-foot drop into a pool of toxic green water. When the ride opened in 1996, Steven Spielberg requested to be let off at the top of the drop because he didn't want to get his suit wet – we say, just bring a towel and don't wear your Sunday best.

Sometimes, the oldies are the goodies and this legendary ride has been rocketing riders through outer space since 1975. Unlike its modern counterparts, there are no loops and it travels at less than 30mph, but it’s the theming that sets it apart and the small drops feel a lot bigger when you can’t see them coming. Completely enclosed in darkness, the five-minute tour of the solar system takes you through bright clusters of stars, into the vortex of black holes and racing alongside asteroids. Every visit to Magic Kingdom has to include a blast into Space Mountain.

Towering above Magic Kingdom, the snow-capped peaks of this Himalayan-themed coaster can be seen from every point in the park. A slow climb drags you to the peak, before you race down a rickety track which suddenly disappears over a cliff edge and the cart comes to a sudden halt. You’re then dragged backwards and begin barrelling through the inside of the mountain in pitch darkness before you're cast into the light for a stomach-churning 50-foot drop towards earth. Like every Everest adventure, it’s a terrifying feat of endurance.

Hop aboard the rickety elevator in the Hollywood Tower Hotel and prepare your nerves for a bone-shaking experience. You'll ascend the floors and meet some ghostly guests before you hear the snapping of cables and the lift plummets to the ground at lightning speed. You then shoot up three stories before the lights fail and it’s time for the gravity-defying finale. It’s not recommended that you ride this stomach-churning thriller immediately after lunch.

Follow the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow during a time when pirates ruled the seas. It opened long before Jonny Depp and his crew burst onto the big screen but you’ll meet many recognisable characters as you descend into the Dead Man’s Cove where skeletal ghouls guard their loot. You’ll then ride through a turbulent storm and dodge cannonballs before you spill back into the calm lagoon where the voyage began. This is one for the whole family.

Given the scale of the theme parks, many members find planning a trip here a little overwhelming, so it’s always worth calling us to take care of everything. If you want the rides on your doorstep, we are partnered with the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort, which is the only true five-star resort in the theme park. You can take advantage of complimentary breakfast, wi-fi, $100 spa credit, a welcome gift and a room upgrade* when booking through us. Alternatively, ask us for hotel or villa recommendations outside the park which are an option for all budgets and group sizes.

Getting there

Most major airlines fly daily direct to Orlando, which takes around 10 hours from the UK. When booking through our partnered airlines such as British Airways, you can benefit from directly negotiated fares that are often lower than you’ll find elsewhere.
