Six weekend brunch spots in Manchester

Six weekend brunch spots in Manchester

Kick-start the weekend with a long, lazy brunch at one of these local favourites

Judging by the number of bookings we make for our members, brunch is by far the most important meal of the weekend. It’s a chance for a lazy afternoon with coffee and the papers; it’s a great opportunity to catch up with friends; and it’s an excuse to drink a glass of champagne before midday.

For an all-American experience… The Pen and Pencil

Fourways House, 57 Hilton Street

Mad Men fans will recognise the name of this Northern Quarter staple as one of Don Draper and co’s favourite New York hangouts. Inspired by the Manhattan steakhouse, the Manchester version is all bare brick, cast iron columns and distressed wooden floors. Even at brunch, the menu focuses on steak and the 4oz rump with eggs and hash brown is the biggest seller, with the stacks of pancakes coming in a close second. The smoothies will kick-start your day the healthy way, but it’ll take a lot of will power to resist the pistachio and cardamom-infused espresso martinis. Pictured top

Albert's ShedFor sunshine and cocktails… Albert’s Shed

18-20 Castle Street

In the spring and summer months, the terrace tables on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal are among the most in demand in the whole city. If the sun is shining and the prosecco is flowing, brunch here can easily turn into a full-day affair. The gargantuan breakfast buttie has become stuff of legend and should soak up some of the bubbly – it’s packed with sausages, a fried egg, cheddar, pancetta, black pudding and Bloody Mary ketchup. For something a little less calorific, opt for the waffles with coconut yoghurt, berries, caramelised banana and maple syrup. Reservations are essential – contact us to book.

FederalFor the best coffee in town… Federal

9 Nicholas Croft

This lively weekend haunt channels the sun-soaked Australian coast with a menu of light, summery dishes like corn fritters stacked with bacon, sun-blushed tomatoes, fried egg and sriracha-spiked hollandaise. The coffee comes from New Zealand-owned and London-operated roasters Ozone and is one of the best brews in town – you can even pick up some beans to take away. For something stronger, there’s a small range of brunch cocktails with mimosas and peach bellinis priced at just £5.

Neighbourhood - avocado and eggsFor bottomless bubbly… Neighbourhood

The Avenue North

Since opening in 2013, this stylish restaurant has built a reputation as a fun-loving spot for groups of friends to gather before a night out – fuelled by gin o-clock every Saturday from 4.30-7pm, when all gin cocktails are just £5. It’s just as lively on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when the wonderful brunch menu is accompanied by bottomless Bloody Marys, seasonal cocktails or prosecco for £35 per person. It’s available from 10am to 1pm and drinks are served for 90 minutes from your arrival time.

For fresh baked bread… Common

39 Edge Street

You’ll be hit by the smell of fresh loaves as you walk into this stylish, Scandi-inspired dining space. For brunch they bake bread in the basement and serve it with all the classic toppings, from smashed avocado to smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. It’s the kind of place where locals linger for hours with the papers and a few rounds of the excellent Bloody Marys, so it’s essential you make a reservation a few days in advance – contact us to secure a table.

For a health kick… Evelyn’s

G18 Tib Street

Anyone on a health kick should make a Sunday morning beeline to this cute café that’s won the hearts of local foodies with its interesting take on brunch. Forget eggs benedict and fry-ups, it’s all about shakshuka with baked eggs, buttermilk pancakes with homemade honeycomb butter and bowls piled high with kale, herbs, lentils, avocado and seeds. Even the coffee menu is unlike any other – swap your latte for a vanilla and cacao nib mocha. They will cater for most dietary requirements, so just inform one of the friendly staff.
