Best for: family-friendly dining in London

Where to eat out with the children this summer

School’s out for the summer, which means parents are on the lookout for restaurants across the capital that’ll welcome little ones. Thankfully, many of the best chefs in London have adapted their menus for a younger – and often fussier – audience and we’ve hunted down the best places for burgers, pizza and mounds of ice cream. Here are our family picks for the summer.

Pizza from… Hai Cenato

Jason Atherton may be best known for his portfolio of very grown-up Michelin-starred restaurants, but he also has the knack for creating dining spaces that put parents and their children at ease. At lunchtime, this place is alive with chatter so you don’t need to worry too much about your kids’ noise levels; plus, once the pizza arrives they’ll be too busy devouring the fluffy dough creations to make much commotion.

Depending on how adventurous they’re feeling, children can choose between a classic margherita or something more flamboyant like the fennel sausage, prosciutto, stracciatella and marjoram.

Burgers from… Bar Boulud

Sure, you could grab a Big Mac from the nearest McDonald’s and the children would probably be happy; but for something that’ll satisfy their burger craving and your need for something a little more civilised, it’s got to be Bar Boulud. This buzzy spot underneath the Mandarin Oriental always ranks high in our ever-changing list of London’s best burgers and the classic Yankee with a portion of skinny fries is an all-American triumph.

While they’re demolishing the towering burgers, you can tuck into authentic plates of Provençal-inspired cooking – in summer, it’s all about the grilled seabass with freekeh rice and rose harissa.

Fish and chips from… Hix Soho

Mark Hix has long been campaigning for restaurants to up their game when it comes to providing decent food for children and he’s leading by example. There are some grown-up dishes on the menu like chicken escalope with a wild herb salad and minute steak with fries, but the fish and chips always gets the double thumbs up from little ones. Portions are generous but there will always be room for the rich Peruvian gold chocolate tart.

Parents will be happy to hear that children under 10 eat free when accompanied by a dining adult between 4-6pm on weekdays and 12-6pm at weekends.

Meatballs and spaghetti from… Heddon Street Kitchen

Gordon Ramsay has passed the culinary baton to his daughter Tilly, who has recently released her first cookbook which focuses on home-cooked favourites. Some of these are currently featured on the children’s menu and the meatballs in a rich tomato sauce with perfectly al dente spaghetti would do an Italian grandma proud. Alternatively, little ones can choose slow-cooked beef with mash, fish and chips or a chicken Caesar salad.

While the youngsters are slurping milkshakes, you can enjoy a complimentary glass of prosecco when booking a table through us and children under 12 will receive their meal for free with every adult dining from the à la carte menu.

Waffles from… The Ivy Café Marylebone

You’ll be surprised to hear that even The Ivy’s legendary Covent Garden restaurant accepts well behaved children and while there’s no dedicated menu, the chefs will create mini versions of à la carte classics. However, for something a little more laid-back, choose one of the brasseries and cafés dotted around the capital. They’re all buzzy spots that welcome kids but it’s the sweet waffles smothered in nuts, honeycomb, ice cream and fruit that give the Marylebone iteration our seal of approval.

Reservations are always essential at any of the group’s restaurants – contact us to find your closest and discuss availability.

Ice cream sundaes from… Fortnum & Mason

Children will have to be particularly well behaved during the holidays to earn themselves a Knickerbocker Glory from The Parlour on the first floor of the iconic department store. First presented to the adoring public in 1955, the signature dessert is created with layers of ice cream, fresh raspberry coulis and whipped cream, topped with a meringue crust. If your children would rather get creative, let them build their own ice cream sundae from the myriad of flavours and multi-coloured toppings – the only limit is their imagination and appetite.

There’s a great selection of hot drinks and beautiful cakes for parents and reservations are highly recommended during school holidays.

White chocolate cheesecake from… Blacklock City

It says something about the quality of the cheesecake at this Square Mile standout that even after stacks of rare-breed pork chops your children will be asking for a huge slab of dessert. Served straight from the baking tray using the ‘say when’ method of distribution, it’s topped with fresh summer fruits and has the perfect balance of fluffy topping and crunchy biscuit base.

They’ll also love the homemade nettle lemonade, but mum and dad should choose from the £5 cocktail trolley – the Old Fashioned is particularly good.
