HighclereGetting hooked on history

With theatre companies across the world blurring the lines between performance and reality, immersive experiences are nothing new; but very few go to the lengths that Yves Saint Clair do during their exclusive weekend events to ensure their guests are transported to another time in history.

Ever since he was a boy growing up among the mountains and castles of Valais in Southern Switzerland, founder Yves Couturier has had a fascination with the days when royalty and aristocracy ruled from their fortresses high among the snow-cloaked peaks.

These childhood imaginings of knights on horseback and armies going into battle developed into a life-long fascination and today Yves dedicates himself to learning about Europe’s rich and tumultuous past. Yves is interested in history on a human level and this spurred his desire to create a series of luxury events that give guests a deep insight into the art, culture, food, fashion and music of the time.

Four Seasons Hotel HampshireRecreating the Roaring Twenties

With its cocktail-fuelled parties, flamboyant fashion and jazz soundtrack, few eras are as evocative as the 1920s. The post-war era was a golden age of discovery, empowerment and social change and the Yves Saint Clair event in December will embrace every element of life enjoyed by the social elite.

On Wednesday 13 December, guests will assemble at the magnificent Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire, nestled within 500 acres of historic parkland. Just an hour from central London, this Georgian manor house is located in an estate first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is here that King Henry VIII met his first wife Catherine of Aragon in 1501. Today it’s a portal back in time that will serve as a stylish backdrop to meet fellow guests over dinner created by the talented chef Dirk Gieselmann.

The next day, the party moves to the incredible Highclere Castle. Set amid a 5,000-acre estate deep in the Hampshire countryside, this Jacobethan country house has seen its fair share of drama – if the walls could talk they’d tell stories of wartime heroics, lavish all-night banquets and Ancient Egyptian discoveries. It is in the wood-panelled drawing rooms and dramatic dining room that the main event will unfold and guests will be cast back to the Jazz Age.

Much of the evening is being kept tightly under wraps, but you can expect a full immersion into the 1920s with live music, opulent decorations and artwork, an authentic five-course dinner with vintage wines and Champagnes and, of course, new friends.

Switching off from modernity

Despite the scientific advances of the time, the 1920s were still an age of technological innocence and besides early adopters of the telephone, connectivity relied on telegrams, mail and long-distance journeys to see friends. During the course of the event, guests are encouraged to detox from their gadgets to truly connect with the experience and fellow guests. In a world that relies so heavily on instant communication and social media updates, Yves Saint Clair believe that a technology detox and returning to simpler times is an incredibly important part of the experience at Highclere.

Yves Saint Clair also encourage guests to dress to the nines – this was, after all, the time true of sartorial liberation. From flapper dresses and feather bowers to tuxedos and slicked-back hair, the fashion of the time called for men and women to break free from the conservative, fussy and uncomfortable clothes of pre-war Britain and this is your chance to re-style yourself.

When it’s time to re-connect the modern world, guests will leave the fun and flamboyance of the 1920s and be left with indelible memories of their unique time in history.
