The world’s most treasured island resorts

Play Robinson Crusoe in some of the most secluded spots around the globe

From the deserted beaches of the Seychelles to the crystal-clear waters of French Polynesia, our Travel team has compiled a list of our members’ favourite island getaways.

Bawah IslandBawah Island, Indonesia

In a world where very few areas have been left unexplored, places like the remote Bawah Island are unique. Only accessible by seaplane, the tiny collection of five islands lies 150 nautical miles east of Singapore and – aside from the 35 beautiful eco-friendly lodges – remains completely untouched by humans. This means that nature still reigns supreme; the virgin forest is teaming with wildlife and the waters of the three lagoons are rich with tropical fish and rare corals – which the resort is dedicated to protecting through a range of conservation schemes.

It may be remote, but the resort – which opened this summer – hasn’t scrimped on luxury and guests can choose between garden suites cocooned in the jungle, beachfront villas overlooking the sand and stilted bungalows for diving straight into the water. A maximum of 70 guests can inhabit the islands at any one time and with 13 beaches to choose from, you’ll feel like you have this paradise to yourself.

The BrandoThe Brando, French Polynesia

Ten years in the making, this is the product of Marlon Brando’s partnership with Richard Bailey, CEO of Pacific Beachcomber, to create a post-carbon, self-sustaining island resort also promoting environmental research. Located in Tetiaroa, a 12-islet atoll 30 miles from Tahiti, privacy and seclusion is key – the beach is private, and each of the 35 villas has its own plunge pool; even the Spa Arii Vahine is surrounded by over 21,000 square feet of forest and plants so the outside world remains just that.

Fly straight into its airfield, partake in Polynesian dance, music and handicraft lessons, enjoy water sports, dine on fine cuisine and meet local researchers on guided nature tours. Turtles can be observed at night from November to March, and there’s whale watching between August and October.

Song Saa Private IslandSong Saa Private Island, Cambodia

Dotted across two islands in an isolated corner of the Koh Rong archipelago, this may not be the easiest resort to reach – it’s a four-hour drive from Siem Reap – but that’s part of its appeal. Once you’re ensconced it’ll be impossible to prise yourself from the untouched beaches, stilted lodgings and water so clear you barely need a snorkel. Being in the middle of a large marine reserve means conservation is high priority and guests share the land and sea with an incredibly diverse array of life.

The large one- and two-bedroom villas are either built into the jungle or perched over the water, with vast four-poster beds and an earthy interior design that complements the surroundings. A walkway snakes off the southwestern tip of the smaller island, leading to a magnificent restaurant that brings Khmer classics into the modern day. All sorts of activities are available, from kayak trips with a marine biologist to scuba diving over surrounding reefs.

Fregate Island PrivateFregate Island Private, Seychelles

As well as being a sanctuary for holidaymakers, this island resort in the Indian Ocean is orientated towards conserving the indigenous forests and endangered species. A total of 16 residences ensures that privacy prevails, and the hotel only shares the premises with the native fauna, including some 2,000 free-roaming tortoises.

There are seven beaches and guests can dine just about anywhere, but the most romantic spot is at the top of an ancient banyan tree. Ayurvedic treatments at the spa are tailor-made for each guest and can be accompanied by a healthy eating plan to optimise detoxification and rejuvenation.
